ARE YOU NOT RESPONSIBLE TOO?

For whatever reason, I didn’t cook. By evening, I felt hungry so I decided to go get myself some drinks. When I stepped outside, I saw a child riding a bicycle and asked to ride too. He gladly came off and handed it over to me. I looked at him and went like ”what will you do if I run away with it?”.
The child screamed pointing to some men coming towards us, ”my brothers are coming, they will beat me if they see you on it”. Shaking while saying it.
I got off quickly and he took his bicycle back.
Those were men and they took a different route, he didn’t know them.

He gave me a smirk. I guess I got my answer.

I recounted this on my status and had a hard laugh about it, I was marveled at how the child had outsmarted me. Shortly after, I went back on my status and reading it made me think more about it.

I thought about how the child innocently gave me his bicycle. Full of trust and I broke it. It did not even take action (unless we technically consider speaking as an act.) With my words, I instantly destroyed and distorted his perception of me.
I am wondering what story I would be writing now if I had just said thank you and enjoyed my ride. Maybe I would be recounting a beautiful moment where the wind kissed my face.

Have we ever considered how the things we say and do sometimes affect our relationship with people and actually cause them to behave in a certain way towards us? Your friend is acting up or is changing, could do spare a minute and consider if you had anything to do with it?

I want us to understand that as we engage in various relationships, we have the power to influence everything, whether it’s trust, loyalty, intimacy, etc by our words and actions. As much as possible be conscious of what you say to them and how you act.

The next time anything happens, good or bad, ask yourself how you contributed to making that happen.

Till next time,
Afiya.
